I remember the war. The last picture, of your father in Schweinfurt, struck my heart. I was an American Field Service exchange student there in 1953. Many of the buildings were still war-damaged. Your father's recollection of the war reminds us how horrible it was and how courageously those who fought it carried on.

Cathy you have shared a remarkable story that I didn't know about Jim experience. We worked together at the Journal and I have so much respect for your Dad. My father was a POW in Germany after being shot down in a B-24. Who knows, maybe they passed each other on at the end of the war and they left Germany. Unfortunately my father didn't share many details of the war. It had to have been so painful. Give Jim a big hug from me when you see him! Frieda Squires

Cathy, I love your posts and this is fabulous. I am writing a book about my grandfathers walk across Belgium in WWI to escape the German army. It is incredible what our fathers and grandfathers lived through. Thank you so much for sharing.

Thank you for this post and the previous installment. I worked with your dad at the Journal; he discovered I was born in Oberlin and my dad graduated from Oberlin, so we bonded over that.

These memories from your father are really wonderful - and no surprise that he had a career as a writer. My own uncle, age 20, was killed in Germany on November 29, 1944, a few miles from where your father was, and just prior to the Battle of the Bulge itself. So these memories indicate a bit of what my own family member experienced.
